Manganese is a required trace mineral for all living organisms

Manganese is found as a free element in nature often in combination with iron and other minerals.

Manganese ions function as cofactors for a number of enzymes. Therefore the element is a required trace mineral for all living organisms. It is a very brittle, hard, gray-white mineral resembling iron.

As a free element, manganese is a very important industrial metal. It is used in alloying metals and as an industrial pigment as the manganese ions are variously colored.
